CREATING A NEW COUNTRY 3

First of all, apologies for the major tech problems which kept us from posting for the last month. Nevertheless we have been busy.

The subject we need to explore today is local democracy, or the lack of it, and by coincidence one event has arisen which demonstrates exactly how bad things are. The current events surrounding Flamingo Land serve to demonstrate how little respect is paid to the right of self-determination at local and national level, made all the worse by the fact that this is the result of behaviour on the part of our own government here in Scotland.

A link to the full article on Flamingo Land is at the foot of this blog.

This is representative of everything we need to clear up before we can really consider the matter of independence. Self-determination is fundamental to establishing what we can call a true democracy and self-determination is sadly lacking in our current political structure.

There have been many calls for a national convention but, for the most part, these proposals seem to consist of the great and the good – the people, i.e. you and I, are left waiting to see what the politicians come up with and the politicians appear to be oblivious to the fact that they themselves are the problem or at least a greater part of it. The idea that they should ask the people themselves what sort of democracy we all want to live in is clearly anathema to Holyrood.

ICCPR

In terms of local power, Scotland is the least well represented country in Europe. Even our established local authorities are increasingly seeing their powers depleted and their access to the finances needed to serve their constituents reduced by a government which actively seeks centralisation while at the same time contracting out the functioning of the administration to the private sector. We need to address this.

More to follow.
